Brought to you by Cabot China & Emerging Markets Report
For this week’s Stock Market Video, the last one of the year, Cabot China & Emerging Markets Report Editor Paul Goodwin decided to do something a little different to look back at all that has happened in 2011. Paul recited a poem that he wrote re-capping both the high- and low-lights of the year to the beat of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

The Year in Review...
By Paul Goodwin
The budget debates gave investors a rash
As markets collapsed in a big August crash.
The Eurozone found it had too much to lose
From weakened economies singing the blues.
Debate on the debt ceiling made us all wail
As Congress chalked up just one more epic fail.
The Super Committee tried bridging the gap
But that ideological gorge was no snap.
One bond-rating company got so upset
It lowered its rating on Treasury debt!
(It won’t make much difference at my house or your house
But might sent the U.S. to the Standard & Poors-house.)
And Japan took a hit from a massive tsunami
Then a nuclear meltdown, a bad double whammy
The year’s biggest hurricane wasn’t too mean
And the U.S. was glad to say Goodnight Irene.
This year we lost someone whose death made us grapple
With a future without the co-founder of Apple
We’re sad about all jobless sisters and brothers
But the loss of some Jobs just hurts more then others.
We don’t give much thought to Kim Kardashian—
Beyond a deep longing she’ll soon fall from fashion.
But one good result of this year’s Kim K. craze
She shed some light on a vague fairytale phrase:
Now “Happily ever after” means just 72 days.
The Arab Spring movement meant changing regimes
As dictatorships came apart at the seams.
Mubarak of Egypt finally ran out of luck
And Libya’s Kaddafi forgot he should duck.
The old proverb says you can run, but not hide.
And after a decade of search far and wide
The watching paid off by our folks in the field
And Osama bin Laden finally got his fate sealed.
We all know investing in stocks can be chancy
And Cabot’s advice is anything but fancy.
Our recommendation is for a great holiday,
With adults relaxing and children at play.
The New Year holds promise, but that all can wait
We wish you all joy, peace and plenty right down to the last cookie crumb on the plate.
December at Cabot, with the holidays near
And we’re looking back at the vanishing year.
So here are some verses not deep or profound
Just the year in review as the new one rolls round.
